Print Materials for communities

Many local teams have worked hard to produce print materials that are useful and needed for the communities.
Here is a short summary of them.

Book was compiled for the Loloan community with the
newly settled orthography. During the initial work in
the Lolan community, it became evident there was
confusion related to the Loloan language orthography that
created misunderstandings.
As part of the outreach and exploitation phase of OCSEAN
the team from Udayana University organized orthography
workshops with the community to discuss the difficulties
and settle for rules, then compiled an orthography
guide and the children’s bed-time story book to
implement the guide and to use the tool in practice.

Book on the Burdha tradition for the Loloan community in the locally spoken Loloan Malay Book completed by the Lolam community in Jembran, Bali in collaboration with the researchers from Udayana University, Bali, Indonesia. The team was lead by Prof I Gusti Ayu Gde Sosiowati and the local research assistants were given basic training in the documentation of their traditions recorded the rituals and transcribed the texts. This book is to perserve the unique Burdha tradition in pictures and the texts.
The book with translations and summaries in Indonesian and English is a result of a long-term and continous collaboration between the Udayana University researchers lead by Prof I Gusti Ayu Gde Sosiowati and the Loloan community. The book was printed in October 2024 and has been shared with the Loloan community during the outreach.

The Alor OCSEAN team has compiled a children’s book for Local language learning. The team also organized an Orthography workshop with the community and teachers. This is to fill the need for print materials for children in their local language.

The idea of this tri-lingual folk narrative book was born from the communication between scholars from Indonesia and Estonia, a country about 15000 kilometres away from East Nusa Tenggara. A Co-creation lead by Merili Metsvahi from the University of Tartu and Thersia Tamelan from the Universitas Kristen Artha Wacana who was leading the local team who collected, recorded, transcribed and translated the stories.
In this book the oral telling of the story is kept as much to the original as possible, the voice of the teller is so better preserved. The stories are not anonymous, all the narrators are named, and the relation between the collector and narrator is revealed in each short introduction before the stories from a certain region.
A teacher training was also conducted for the use of the book in native language learning and folk story telling.

Dictionary presents various types of nouns with pictures to illustrate them. This dictionary is written in Hawu, using data from the Seba and Raijua dialects as the primary reference. The grouping of nouns is done according to the perspective of the Sabu and Raijua communities. Because the words in this dictionary are collected from speakers of the Seba and Raijua dialects, there may be variations in terms in various regions of Sabu. Authors hope this will serve as a reference for students, university students, Hawu speakers and enthusiasts, and for Hawu speakers who want to learn Indonesian and English.

This illustrated dictionary is written in the Dela-Oenale language with the Dela dialect as the main reference, and translated into Indonesian and English. The Dela-Oenale language (ISO 639-3:row) is an Austronesian language from the western part of Rote Island in Eastern Indonesia, spoken by approximately 11,000 native speakers. This dictionary presents various types of nouns grouped into nine major categories: world, body parts, creatures, fish, birds, colors, plants, family, and numbers.
The grouping of words into various categories is adapted to the mindset and worldview of the Dela community. The main purpose of publishing this dictionary is to support the revitalization program of regional languages in East Nusa Tenggara, especially in the West Rote region. It is hoped that this dictionary can become a resource book used in teaching local content in schools and a reference for students, speakers of the Dela language, and anyone who wants to learn the Dela-Oenale language.
