The major effort of OCSEAN Summer School Tartu 2024 is to bring together again many people who started their journey in Uppsala 2022 Summer Training Course. Now back from their fieldwork seasons, participants were guided by Associate Professor George Saad and Hanna Fricke through the frothy seas of Data curation, so collected linguistic data can be ready for archiving and further analyses. Professor Marian Klamer from Leiden University helped to work on orthography guides and Jesse Daniel Holmes from the Universit of Tartu facilitated the transcriptions.
Many had been to the field and collected linguistic data to be archived in PARADISEC, but a lot of tedious work had to be done before the collection could be properly archived.
Under steady and patient guidance of Hanna and George the datasets took shape - file naming conventions, data formats, transcriptions, orthography reviewed. Participants relied also on each others expertise, so collectors from Indonesia and the Philippines formed groups to jointly work on datasets. In addition, some data collection of Papuan languages took place on site.
In parallel, Associate Professor Djuddah Leijen from the University of Tartu taught Academic Writing classes where Summer School participants could reflect on their writing, but most of all, write their article drafts, review them in writing groups, learn to ask and give feedback.
