OCSEAN Linguistic Workshops in Indonesia and the Philippines, April-June 2023

The workshops are led by Dr George Saad of Palacký University Olomouc in both Indonesia and the Philippines, in co-operation with Dr Owen Edwards of Leiden University in Indonesia. The workshops continue the OCSEAN mission of growing local expertise in collaboration with our partners in Indonesia and the Philippines. Workshops were held in Universitas Tribuana Kalabahi, Alor; Universitas Artha Wacana, Kupang; Universitas Udayana, Bali in Indonesia and in Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City and Ifugao State University, Ifugao in the Philippines. The participants got a comprehensive overview on how to collect and process linguistic data on a target language: lexical data (long wordlist) and textual data. Participants learned how to transcribe the data. Workshop participants learn the importance of informed consent from their informants and how documenting languages helps to preserve and revitalize local indigenous languages. The workshops open the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques in documenting indigenous languages with hands-on utilization of modern tools, the collected results help to fill the gaps in the knowledge about so far undocumented languages.
