The second OCSEAN International Conference June 5th to 10th 2023 in the Philippines

The second OCSEAN International Conference took place from June 5th to 10th in 2023 in the Philippines, in southern Mindanao between the cities of Tagum, Davao, T’boli and the Municipality of Lake Sebu. The conference was organized by OCSEAN consortium and OCSEAN Philippines, an energetic organization formed by the Philippine participants of the OCSEAN Summer School 2022 in Uppsala. The conference had a total of 35 talks presented on linguistics (7), genetics (8), archaeology (7) and heritage (13). Conference days were interspersed with immersion to local culture. The presenters were open-heartedly received by Mangguangan, Blaan and T’boli people carrying the rich living traditions of southern Mindanao. Conference participants learned about the traditional dance and music performances, bead art, brass work, stories, and weaving practices, but also the current day challenges at various communities. Conference bridged and bound the scientific results from various fields of research and the local heritage knowledge from the communities with vivid discussions and laying out the prospects.
